Cullum Shiel: A Historical Homestead with Modern Comforts

Cullum Shiel's storied past is highlighted by its original driveway, part of the old road to Durban from the northern mines, including Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). The Coach House, a key feature of the property, once sheltered carriages, horses, and coachmen. Distinguished passengers like Sir Cecil John Rhodes and Barney Barnato would rest overnight at the farmhouse while the coachmen continued to the Coach House.
The original rectangular structure of the Coach House showcases two levels with distinct flooring. The ground floor retains its original hexagonal wooden tiles, with terracotta replacements in some areas. The upper floor, constructed from Yellowwood, served as the resting quarters for coachmen. Two external timber staircases on the North and South facades provided access to the upper floor, while a trap door on the southern wall connected the two levels. A circular stone on the South wall once housed a clock, reminiscent of those found at old train stations. The original black slate roof has been replaced with durable corrugated iron.
In the 1980s, Mr. Nicols transformed the property into a residential estate, adding a kitchen on the North side and a triple garage on the South side. He incorporated a stunning stained glass door from a 400-year-old German castle, crafted from Burmese teak and adorned with traditional crushed precious stones.
Cullum Shiel now features a main house with four bedrooms, including three en-suite bathrooms. A pajama lounge leads to a large balcony overlooking the manicured garden.
